Standardizing service provider edge sites on SONiC
How we help a service provider move hundreds of edge and aggregation sites to white-box switches running SONiC, managed centrally.
This is an example of how we approach this kind of project, not a report on a named client engagement.
The typical starting point
A provider operates hundreds of small edge sites with a mix of switch models and software versions. Every site is slightly different, upgrades are manual, and support contracts are a large recurring cost.
How we run it
- One standard build. A single qualified SONiC image and configuration template per site type.
- Lab replicas. Two or three representative sites rebuilt in the lab to validate the template and the migration steps.
- Migration waves. Sites move in weekly waves using zero-touch provisioning, with the old configuration kept for rollback.
- Central management. Upgrades, configuration and telemetry for every site from one automation pipeline.
What we measure
Time to deploy a site, upgrade success rate, customer-facing outages during cutover, and annual support and licensing cost.
